KamiCon 2017 Fashion Show – Part I, Designers

当サイトの記事には広告、アフィリエイトが含まれています。

KamiCon is Alabama’s largest anime convention in Birmingham, AL and has been a favorite of mine for producing a high production value show. Traditionally KamiCon has not had a lot of lolita programming. Last year the Alabama Lolita Coterie decided to change that by hosting a lolita fashion show. This year, they have expanded the fashion show by adding more polish, and three American indie designers. Puvithel, from Atlanta, GA; A. Gato Designs, from Washington, D.C.; And The Black Ribbon from San Francisco, CA.

There were twelve themed community models and eleven looks from the three indie designers. Each community model was styled after a storybook fable and coordinated with a wide variety of brand, indie, and homemade items. KamiCon, the designers, and the Alabama Lolita Coterie promoted the event on facebook, resulting in a full house!

Since there were so many fantastic coordinates to go through, I’ve split up my coverage of this event into two parts – Designers and Community Looks.

KamiCon 2017 Fashion Show – Part I, Designers

A. Gato Designs

Models: Caitlin, Britney, Paulina Gato, Allison, Nikki

When asked what inspired her looks for the show, designer Paulina Gato of A. Gato answered, “For my collection I was very inspired by a fabric print I found recently at one of my local fabric shops. It just called to me.”

“Deer have a natural beauty and grace that I feel fits very well with the Lolita aesthetic. I spent a good amount of time mulling over my garment designs for this collection and ended up with the story of a young maiden meeting a forest king/deity and taking his crown.” Her King of the Forest line certainly fits in well with the show’s theme, Forest Fables.

The Black Ribbon

When asked the same question, designer Halley Malison of The Black Ribbon replied, “This year’s couture looks were created with a theme of “The Dim and the Dark”, a reference to one of my favorite albums. The titular song is about finding a spark of light in those dark moments, and letting that lead you forward.” The Dim and the Dark is an alternative rock album by Jump, Little Children.

Models: Amber, Jamie

“The main colors of this collection were black and metallics. I specifically sought out black velvet since it is one of the darkest colors you can achieve in design, which I then contrasted with bright touches of metallic lace and trims.”

Models: Krisbot, Amber, Jaimie

“[I’m] trying to show that the brightest moments can shine best when put against the darkest black.” Inspiring words!

Puvithel

For my looks, I drew inspiration from Over the Garden Wall – a story that shows how dark and mysterious the forest can be. I tried to imagine what sort of characters would choose to live in such a place. Maybe not every forest creature is there of their own violation…

I created four looks representing tropes from fantasy and fairy tales. A ghost girl, unable to pass into the afterlife. A captured Princess and an Evil Queen. And, referencing Baba Yaga, a kooky witch who finds it easier to perform her alchemical rites in the forest.

As this show was my first large fashion show, I wanted to create looks that showcased a broad spectrum of what I do. These outfits feature print designs I created with three different styles of original artwork – pixel art, vector art, and traditional pen-and-ink – paired off with embroidered bags, handmade accessories and laser-cut designs.
