Surfacespell Freak Show Review

by milkcircus

Hello! Today, I will be reviewing Surfacespell’s series Freak Show, a print series by Surfacespell, a Chinese Lolita brand known for their elegant designs and embroideries! They produce very high-quality dresses and accessories that add to any beautiful wardrobe. Freak Show features twin bunnies in front of a circus-inspired background, curtains, embroideries, lace, and tassels! Despite being released in 2015, I was unable to find any reviews or even any worn pictures of this series so thus this review was born to provide information for anyone else interested in the series!

Ordering

I came across pictures of Surfacespell’s Freak Show print online through Google searches while I was first beginning to build my wardrobe. I fell in love with the print as soon as I saw it! When I finally got the funds together, I took the plunge and made an order! I ordered my JSK through Wunderwelt Fleur and purchased the bag secondhand from another Lolita. Originally, I had ordered a Size L through Wunderwelt, but I became worried about the fit. I asked Wunderwelt to change the size to XL before they shipped it and they happily made the change!

First Impressions & Details

The material is very silky and very shiny! It’s incredibly soft to the touch. The shiny texture makes a beautiful effect when sunlight it directly on it. The level of detailing that has gone into this dress is amazing! There’s a lot of amazing detailing involved with the dress! The red lace is beautifully floral themed. The white lace is very flowery and the gold lace makes amazing detailing across the top and front of the bodice.

Downsides

While the dress is extremely beautiful, my biggest negative has to be the zipper. The zipper does not go up all the way to the top of the fabric so it makes it a bit more difficult to put on. It’s not a dress you can just step into because of the zipper location so it takes more time and care to pull it on over the head. Likewise, stretching the fabric is also a problem as the designs on the front of the dress are sewn down, it’s possible to accidentally pull on these and thus pull a thread like what happened with my dress. This material is silky so it’s important to treat the garment as such and to avoid sharp objects that might create a tear or run in the fabric.

Coordination

Overall, when paired with the matching bag, it makes for a beautiful coordinate! The red is very rich and pairs well with black, brown, ivory, gold, and white due to the print detailing and different kinds of lace. The print photos very well from a distance and the color pops a lot! I was able to wear this combination earlier this year!
